How often will you be using it to back up your PC or laptop? Lastly, will you be making the portable hard drive portable? If you plan on taking it with you, you may want to consider optioning for a lighter model. Although, these are more expensive. Hard Drive Storage Size The storage size of external hard drives can be as much as 16TB. We think this is a little overkill and very few people will ever need anything nears as much as this. When you consider that the average computer has a built in hard drive of around 500GB to 1TB.
If you are looking for an external storage device for just a few photos and some files then you may wish to consider getting a cheap USB memory stick, or flash drive. These are small USB sticks that can be attached to a key ring and always come in handy. That being said, if you still need a cheap external hard drive, then we feel anything from 1TB to 2TB will be more than enough. This will store many HD videos and loads of music, photos and important files. Data Transfer Speed If backing up your data isn't something you do regularly, so once a month for example, then most external hard drives will do the job perfectly. If, however you have really large files, like HD films, that you transfer regularly, you might want to look for a cheap portable hard drive that does this at a quicker speed. So this means you want to be looking for a portable hard drive with a USB 3.0 interface.
2.0 USB is still very common and isn't slow by any means, but the newer generation are faster at transferring data, so worth looking at if you'll be doing loads of back ups. Bear in mind though, that you'll need a 3.0 port on your computer or laptop to run a 3.0 interface on your external hard drive. There are some other types of file transfer external hard drives, but these are expensive, and also not as quick as 3rd generation external hard drives. These are eSATA, FireWire and also Thunderbolt. Thunderbolt is Apple and Intel collaboration and is the fastest file transfer that is out there. It works at 10Mbps, but be warned, it is by no means a cheap portable hard drive.
Portability For the most part, most people will not be to bothered about getting the lightest external hard drive that they can get there hands on, as they'll more than likely be backing up their important data and storing it in their home. If you will be taking the portable hard drive out and about with you, then you might want to for one that is lighter in weight. You will also wish to consider the durability of the hard drive. You don't want to drop it and loose everything on it. So with this in mind, it would be wise to look for a rugged external hard drive with a case. You can even get a waterproof portable hard drive. These are more expensive though.
So only really worth it if you do go out and about with it often. If you'll be using it a lot, you may wish to think about getting a built in fan, and the option of using it with a separate power source. This will help when doing bigger file transfers. Security If you plan on storing sensitive data on your external hard drive then it's defiantly worth shopping for a cheap portable hard drive that comes with a certain level of encryption.
Both of the software application do not detect the device plugged in. Netgear aircard 302u (all others aircard watcher help for machine. What is the trick to getting this AirCard 340U to work with macOS Sierra? I have tried the AT&T All Access connection manager and also the Netgear Watcher software. I upgraded my MacBook Pro to Apple Sierra macOS 10.12 and I can no longer use my 340U device. I know the device is working because I can plug it into a PC and it works fine.
This is even more important if you do plan on going out and about with the external hard drive. Most will have some basic level on encryption, but for better levels, you'll be paying more. Usability If you're not the most tech savvy of people, then we would recommend you consider buying a portable hard drive that has some built in software so it's easier to set up on your PC.
If you are fairly computer literate, this isn't something to get to bothered about. Compatibility What type of device you want to be backing up makes a difference too. If you are on a PC, or a MAC, this makes a difference and you want to make sure that the portable hard drive you buy is compatible with what device you're using. Shopping for the Best External Hard Drive Deals Take your time to decide what you're after in a portable hard drive and that also spend some time looking on the internet to give you an idea of what budget you need to get all the features that you want.
A 4TB 3.0 portable hard drive should set you back around £100-£200. For this you should get some decent transfer speed and 4TB is loads of space.
For a similar spec external hard drive that can handle being bashed and dropped a little then you can expect to pay around £200-£300. As you can see, portable hard drives aren't the cheapest of things.

Rated 2 out of 5 by Anonymous from Great product, horrible packaging by B&H I've had 3 of these a couple of weeks and they have not failed, so I expect they won't.
I've bought probably a dozen Passports over the years and none has ever failed. But B&H shipped these in an oversized box with NO padding. They rattled loose in the shipping box all the way from NY to CA. I can only hope that the delicate drives don't show damage later on.The Passports rate 5 stars if they keep working. B&H rates 1 star for shipping.

Love everything else about B&H, but not its shipping department. Rated 5 out of 5 by Anonymous from WD 4TB Portable Hard Drive I have been a fan of WD Drives for some time and this product has continued to impress. The build is sturdy and pleasing to the eye.
I use WD drives to carry business and leisure files when I travel and the capacity of this one means I can reduce the weight of carrying two or three lots of storage. I have had no problems with WD drives which seem to be extremely reliable and I believe my new 4TB drive will continue to give me the reliabiity I need. Although slightly more expensive than some other makers' products I still feel they are value for money have already recommended them to friends.
Rated 3 out of 5 by Andrei from Great hard drive, (curable) problems with using it on Mac This disk became a brick after I re-formatted it for MAC. I returned it in exchange for another disk, and I had the same problem. However, I found a way around this problem. Apparently one should not format these drives by the latest Mac software 10.13 (!!!), only by the older versions 10.12 or older. This is what I did.
After that, it works without any problems on my Mac running High Sierra 10.13. Perhaps WD people know it because at their website they discuss how to format these drives using older versions of Mac software, but I they did not explain that one should not format them using the latest Mac software.
There is some incompatibility which was mentioned by WD in another respect, which is why I tried the older software, and succeeded. Rated 2 out of 5 by Anonymous from 3 out of 6 failed I have purchased three of these 4TB MyPassport units. One of them failed (won't read, write, or format). Luckily I adhere to the rule 'two backups is one, and one backup is none' so I had two more identical copies of my photography archive. The one that failed had been now twice 'replaced' by WDC under warranty, and it took more work then just buying a new one. I had to wrangle a shipping label, I had to wrangle the second replacement, and now the second replacement failed. (Sure maybe because they keep sending the 'Recertified in Vietnam' editions as 'replacements'.) I dread dealing with terrible support trying to get my third replacement, but on the other hand, WD is a sort of monopoly.
Will try a couple of the 5TB Seagates next. Rated 4 out of 5 by Anonymous from Good capacity drive for extra capacity The 4TB Passport seems to over good capacity for the money. The product was as described online, although I would have preferred the metal case model (was told it was continued 2 weeks after being on back order.) While the WD backup utilities seem to be doing the job, the interface is lacking as it tends to want to operate in the background and does not give out a good interactive screen so you can see more about what it is actually backing up.
If you need additional space, then this is a good drive choice. If you are wanting a backup solution, you may want to review all vendors and select the backup software that is right for you. Rated 5 out of 5 by John M from If you use a computer- this drive is very hard to beat! Priced right and compatible with mac or pc -if you have anything you need backed up- why pay more or look else where? Price- check. Compatibility- check.
Reliability- check (I have like 6 and all work perfectly). Speed - check USB 3.0 is as fast as you can expect. If you have photos, video or word docs or even code you need to back up- better to be safe than sorry. I wish I had a back up everything! Back up house.
A back up car, a back up girl, well you get the idea. Those things are just not possible to back up in today's society- BUT you can afford to back up your data- as a matter of fact- YOU CAN NOT afford NOT to.
